Spring Awakening

Area 405, October 2018

Credit: Stage Manager;  Associate Director; Lighting Designer
Fresh out of undergrad, this show holds an incredibly special place in my heart as the first professional job I was hired for! As the stage manager and associate director, I took part in the many evolutions of this show, including a location change to the venue Area 405, a converted industrial space that became the perfect setting for our time-bending conceptual approach. The themes of Spring Awakening still resonate with the way many of us our still taught today about shame, sexuality, and unmet expectations. I was challenged to design the lighting around practical lamps used throughout the performance. I chose to use a specific color pallet to express the underlying emotional narratives for the main characters, and highlight the various journies into selfhood through sensuality and reality.

"The resultant ghostly glare draws our eyes like moths to a flame, especially when augmented by upward-projecting LED lights that bathe the stark walls surrounding the audience with firework-like bursts of color."
